How blueberries compare
Potassium per 100 g: blueberries ~ 77 mg, strawberries ~ 150 mg, apple ~ 110 mg, grapes ~ 190 mg, banana ~ 360 mg, dried apricots ~ 1160 mg. When a renal dietitian sets a potassium budget of 2000–3000 mg a day, blueberries let you keep fruit in the diet without spending much of it.
Beyond potassium
Blueberries provide vitamin C, fibre and anthocyanins. Trials in adults with cardiovascular risk factors show modest improvements in blood pressure and endothelial function with regular intake. Since cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in CKD, that is a meaningful reason to keep them on the shopping list.
