Gout, urate and CKD
As kidney function falls, urate excretion falls with it, and gout becomes markedly more common. Studies of cherry intake report fewer attacks, probably through anthocyanin effects on inflammation and a small reduction in serum urate. This makes cherries a sensible everyday fruit choice if you get gout, alongside — never instead of — prescribed urate-lowering therapy and adequate fluid.
Portion and potassium
An 80 g portion (about 10 cherries) supplies roughly 175 mg potassium — comparable to an apple and well below a banana. Frozen cherries are equivalent nutritionally. What changes the picture is drying or concentrating: 30 g of dried cherries can carry as much potassium as 150 g of fresh.
