The CKD evidence
Multiple small RCTs (mostly type 2 diabetic nephropathy) have shown 30 g/day ground flaxseed for 8–12 weeks can modestly lower proteinuria and improve lipid profile vs placebo. Not a replacement for ACE inhibitors / SGLT2 inhibitors, but a low-risk dietary addition.
Practical use
Buy whole golden or brown flaxseed, grind 1–2 tbsp daily in a small grinder, store in the fridge (omega-3 oxidises fast). Or buy pre-ground 'milled' flaxseed in resealable bags. Sprinkle over porridge, into yoghurt, blended into smoothies.
Practical CKD-friendly ideas
- 1 tbsp ground flaxseed in morning porridge.
- Stirred into Greek yoghurt with berries.
- Used as an egg substitute in baking (1 tbsp flax + 3 tbsp water).
- Avoid: flaxseed cereals with added salt/sugar; whole seeds (pass through undigested).
