Tinned beans — the rinse rule
Tinned butter beans in salted water can contain 400–600 mg sodium per 100 g. Pour into a sieve, drain, then rinse under cold tap water for 30–60 seconds. This removes most of the brine sodium and a smaller amount of the potassium that has leached into the surface.
Practical CKD-friendly ideas
- Butter bean and roasted pepper salad: 50 g drained beans + peppers + lemon + olive oil + parsley.
- Smashed butter bean toast: 50 g beans mashed with garlic, lemon, black pepper on rye toast.
- Add 50 g to a vegetable stew as a protein boost — skip the salt, build flavour with herbs.
- Avoid: baked beans (added sugar + salt), 'butter bean and chorizo' jars (sodium), creamed butter bean dips with added cheese.
