Symptom relief that actually matters in CKD
Uraemic nausea, early satiety and bloating are among the most under-treated symptoms in advanced kidney disease and often reduce food intake at exactly the point where nutrition matters most. Peppermint has good evidence as an antispasmodic for functional gut symptoms and can make meals more manageable.
Fluid restriction and thirst
If you are on haemodialysis with a fluid allowance, the aim is to make a small volume go further. Freeze weak peppermint tea into cubes and suck them slowly; the cooling menthol sensation relieves thirst out of proportion to the fluid used. Chewing sugar-free gum and rinsing with cold water help too.
When to be careful
- Gastro-oesophageal reflux: peppermint can worsen heartburn.
- Transplant medication: reports suggest peppermint oil may alter ciclosporin levels — mention regular use.
- Peppermint oil capsules are a medicine, not a tea — do not start them without advice.
