Two very different products
Inner-leaf 'fillet' gel drinks are decolourised to remove aloin and are mostly water with polysaccharides. Whole-leaf juice retains the bitter yellow latex, which contains anthraquinone laxatives. Labels rarely make this clear in the UK, so it is difficult for a shopper to know which they are buying.
Why CKD raises the stakes
Kidneys with reduced reserve cope poorly with sudden fluid and electrolyte shifts. Repeated loose stools deplete water and potassium, which can push creatinine up and, in people on ACE inhibitors or diuretics, cause a rapid change in kidney numbers. There are published case reports of acute kidney injury after prolonged aloe latex use.
If you want a gut-friendly drink instead
- Water, or water with lemon.
- Peppermint or chamomile tea for bloating.
- Kefir or live yoghurt if dairy is allowed within your phosphate budget.
- For constipation, ask your GP about a laxative that is appropriate for your kidney function rather than self-treating with herbs.
