How it compares (per 200 ml)
- Almond (unsweetened): ~ 60 mg K, ~ 40 mg P.
- Oat: ~ 130 mg K, ~ 60 mg P.
- Soya: ~ 240 mg K, ~ 100 mg P.
- Semi-skimmed cow's: ~ 300 mg K, ~ 190 mg P, plus 7 g protein.
If your renal team is managing high potassium or phosphate, almond milk is the easiest one-swap change.
The oxalate caveat
Almonds are an oxalate-rich food, and some of that carries into the drink. For people with calcium-oxalate stones the practical advice is a modest daily volume, plenty of fluid, and adequate dietary calcium — calcium binds oxalate in the gut and reduces absorption.
Everyday uses
- Tea, coffee and cereal.
- Smoothies with lower-potassium fruit such as berries or apple.
- Baking and pancakes — behaves much like skimmed milk.
- Remember it is not a protein source; keep your protein from your main meals.
