Why black beans work in CKD
Black beans combine plant protein with low acid load, low glycaemic index, soluble fibre and phytate-bound phosphate. KDOQI 2020 and emerging RCTs support plant-forward CKD diets for slowing progression. Portion control — not avoidance — is the key control.
Oxalate and stone formers
At ~ 70 mg oxalate per 100 g cooked, black beans are moderate (lower than spinach, higher than chickpeas). If you have a history of calcium-oxalate kidney stones, keep portions to 60 g cooked, drink 2 L water daily, and pair with a calcium source (Greek yoghurt, milk) which binds oxalate in the gut before absorption.
Practical CKD-friendly ideas
- Black bean and rice bowl with peppers, lime and coriander.
- Black bean tacos with home-made tomato salsa (no jarred salt).
- Black bean and sweet potato chilli (small portion of leached sweet potato).
- Avoid: tinned 'Mexican-style' beans with added salt, refried beans (often lard + salt), shop-bought burritos.
